Sure we have the Vikings who went raiding and pillaging and scaring people to death, but who also were exploring unknown areas and were clever tradesmen. Sure we have world famous writers, composers, actors and artists like Henrik Ibsen, Edvard Grieg, Liv Ullmann and Edvard Munch. Sure we have Leiv Eirikson, who discovered America. Sure we have the Nobel Peace Prize. Sure we have Roald Amundsen, who discovered the South Pole on December 14, 1911.
Of course we have ADHD too. Since we have members at Svalbard, we are proud to say that we have the most northern ADHD inhabitants.
The parents MBD assosciation was founded in 1979 and changed its name to the Norwegian MBD ass. in 1993. The name was modernized in june 2001 to: ADHD-foreningen. Finaly, in june 2007 the name became: ADHD Norge. We have chapters in every county (19) and there are local support groups and chapters. The support groups are for parents, for adolescents and for adults.
ADHD Norge has since the beginning arranged summer camps for ADHD children and youth, Informational courses for the family. In 1992 we started with seminars for young ADHD adults which has developed into support groups around the country . Having ADHD is tough and can be difficult to understand for the spouse. As a concequence for that we have arranged seminars for adults and their spouses on ADHD and it s toll on relationships.
The Nordic organisations has arranged such seminars every three years since the 1th. was held in Norway 1987. Finland 199X, Sweden 199X , Denmark1996 , Iceland1999 . Event though there are differences between the Nordic countries on ADHD, we work close together , sharing information and experiences. The 6 th Nordic symposium are happening in April 2002.
The Norwegian government provides free schools and free Health Services (except a small fee for each consultation). In theory, there is equal health and schooling availability wherever you live. Each County has the responsibilty to have a child psychiatric unit that can make diagnosis and provide Ritalin or Dexedrine eqv. prescriptions for children and adolescencts.
The schools have their own spesial educational consultants who assist the teacher in testing and evaluation for various learning problems, among them ADHD. Based upon the recomandation made by this community based consultant teams, extra schools resoursces such as spesial education teachers, assitant teachers, computers etc. can be provided.
As an organisation we work hard to ensure that those opportunities are available for our members.
In 1997 the Norwegian parliament passed a bill providing Norwegian adults with ADHD the possibility to also be treated with stimulants. Since this is a new treatment with a controlled substance, strict measures have been set. The advantage of the system is that everybody who seeks stimukantia as adults, participate in a study.
